FAMOUS TARHEELS

From Dolly Madison to Richard Petty, North Carolinians have made their mark on history.

Thomas Wolfe of Asheville and William Sydney Porter (better known as O. Henry) are among our state's famous writers, as is Maya Angelou, poet-laureate, from Winston-Salem. Carl Sandburg spent his last 26 years raising goats at Connemara in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Charles Kuralt of Jacksonville was a familiar figure for decades. His "On The Road Series" told stories of unsung heroes across the country. The TV series "Andy Griffith" was based on Griffith's home town of Mount Airy. Frances Bavier, better known as Aunt Bee, actually retired to Siler City, a town she had visited many times on the show.

Billy Graham, our country's best-known living evangelist, was born in Charlotte and now lives with his wife in Montreat. His daughter, Ann, is married to a Raleigh dentist.

U.S. Senator Jesse Helms has been elected to the Senate four times. Elizabeth Hanford Dole descends from a brick-manufacturing family in Salisbury and President Andrew Johnson was born in a one-room cabin.

Michael Jordan may call Chicago or Washington his home now, but he is originally from Wilmington. His mother lives in a beautiful mansion he built for her on Wrightsville Beach. Likewise, Coach Dean Smith is something of a legend in Chapel Hill.

Charlie Rose. David Brinkley. Doc Watson. James Taylor. They all call the "Old North State" their home.
