Fall Gardening in the Piedmont

After the first hard frost in Raleigh, which usually occurs in mid- to late-October, Triangle residents head outdoors to work in their gardens. If you are a newcomer or are considering making our area your home, here's how we prepare for winter in North Carolina:

  • Aerate, overseed and winterize FESCUE lawns. Fescue is a cool-season grass which means you may have to mow it during the months of November and December, but you will be rewarded with lush green carpet of grass.

  • If planted now, PANSIES will bring color to your yard for the next five months. They thrive in cooler temperatures and seem oblivious to an occasional dusting of snow. Tuck them into pots on your deck, cluster them around a mailbox, or hang in baskets.

  • Invest in DAFFODILS for carefree color for years to come. Top them with CREEPING PHLOX for spectacular springtime displays of white, blue and gold. Don't be tempted to buy tulips because our winters are not cold enough here.

  • Divide DAYLILLIES and HOSTA for stronger plants and bigger blooms next June. Trim CREPE MYRTLES now but it is better not to cut AZALEAS, FORSYTHIA or GARDENIAS this time of year.

  • Prune hybrid tea or floribunda ROSES to 18 to 24 inches after the first frost. It is not necessary to cover and heavily mulch roses as you would in colder climates.

For landscaping ideas and information, go to garden centers and look around. Visit the Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh or the NC Botanical Gardens in Chapel Hill. Two local companies offering roses and perennials on-line are Witherspoon Rose Culture and Niche Gardens.
