OLD RALEIGH vs. NEW RALEIGH
From "Raleigh: A Living History"
Everyone knows that there are two Raleighs--Old Raleigh and New
Raleigh. It used to be that the Beltline separated the two. But
nowadays, Old vs. New is more a state of mind than an address.
Here's how to tell which one you are:
You're OLD RALEIGH if:
- Your daughter's middle name is her mother's maiden name.
- Your grandfather is buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
- You use the word Yankees even when it's not baseball season.
- You miss shopping at Briggs Hardware, Ivey's and Boylan-Pierce.
- Your azaleas are at least three feet high.
- You belong to the Carolina Country Club.
- You remember Hurricane Hazel.
- You know that a toboggan is a hat and not a sled.
You're NEW RALEIGH if:
- You drink unsweetened ice tea.
- Your grandfather is buried in New Jersey.
- You consider the Civil War to be ancient history.
- You fantasize about running over Old Raleigh drivers.
- You shop at Old Navy, Kohls, Target and Stein Mart.
- You can't wait until they finish the Outer Loop.
- You belong to a health club.
- You remember Hurricane Fran.
- You own boots, ice skates, and a snow blower.
