INTERSTATE 540: THE OUTER LOOP From Triangle Newcomer Magazine
If you've been in the Triangle for more than a day, chances are you are already familiar with Interstate-440 (the Beltline), I-40, I-85 and US Highway 70. If you've driven to RTP or to the airport, then you also know the Triangle has a traffic problem.
In a plan to help unclog our region's major traffic arteries, a four-lane Outer Loop (I-540) with 34 proposed interchanges is being built in four sections at a cost upwards of $1 billion. The first section, the Northern Wake Expressway--a 29-mile stretch from Morrisville to Knightdale--is expected to be completed by 2006 (4.6 miles are currently open).
The three other sections of the Outer Loop are still in the planning stages. Construction on the 40+ mile stretch which completes the interstate will not begin for almost a decade, although local business and political leaders are pushing for an early start of the Southern Loop between US Highway 1 to I-40 through Holly Springs.
The Loop will have a major impact on real estate values, commuting, schools and future land development. For a map of the proposed route, visit the NCOT's Web site.
