GOLFERS CHALLENGED BY TRIANGLE GREENS From Triangle Business Corporate Relocation Guide
National studies show that golfers will drive up to an hour to play on a good course. But Triangle duffers don't need to go that far because a plethora of challenging layouts can be found nearby.
Take the first hole at Wake Forest Golf Club, for example, which at 711 yards is reputedly the world's longest par five. First-time players often look at the hole with incredulity, but they also find it irresistible.
Wake Forest Golf Club is one of 18 public or semi-private courses in Wake county. There are six such courses in Durham County, three in Orange County and six in Johnston County. Greens fees, including cart, are generally in the $20s and $30s on weekdays and jump to the $40s on weekends.
There are seven private clubs in Wake County, three in Durham and two in Orange County. Prestonwood Country Club in Cary has three courses, while North Ridge in Raleigh has two. Among future developments being planned is a proposed Hale Irwin TPC course at Wakefield Plantation--a new community in NE Raleigh which will include up to 3,500 homes and three schools.
When you visit the Triangle for a relocation tour, be sure to bring your golf clubs.
