TRIANGLE TRIVIA

Among universities without medical schools, N.C. State University ranks third in the nation in research funding from the National Science Foundation.

Wake County was officially formed in 1771. It was named for the London heiress Margaret Wake, wife of William Tryon, the Royal Governor of the British colony of North Carolina.

New home sales in the Triangle for 1998 were an estimated 7.5 percent higher than in 1997. In the 12-month period ending in September, more new homes were sold here than in Charlotte, the state's largest city.

The Triangle area actually includes four separate school districts: Wake, Durham and Orange Counties, and Chapel Hill City Schools.

A temperature of 67 degrees was recorded at the RDU airport earlier this week (Jan. 13).

Michael Jordan played high school basketball in Wilmington before being recruited by Chapel Hill Coach Dean Smith. Michael recently donated $1 million to UNC's School of Social Work.
