Live in the Triangle- Work in the Park Print E-mail

Research Triangle Park, a 6,900-acre corporate research park created in 1959 between Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, has been a huge catalyst for our area's growth. With over 100 major companies situated there and plenty of room to grow, Research Triangle Park is the largest planned research campus in the U.S.

While IBM and the microelectronics industry gave RTP its first big boost in 1965, the Park is now home to industry giants from other fields including biotechnology, telecommunications, medicine and environmental science. The roster of tenants includes some of the largest corporations in the world: Northern Telecom, Reichhold Chemicals, GTE, Glaxo Wellcome, Novartis, BASF, Sumitomo, GeneTec, Intercardia, CIIT, Lockheed Martin, Underwriters Labs and Cisco Systems.

The federal government has several major research centers at RTP. The Environmental Protection Agency is adding a new $272 million facility, while the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences is the only National Institute of Health agency located outside of Washington, D.C. The Park is headquarters for Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, the National Center for Health Statistics and the National Humanities Center.

Today the Park employs over 50,000 people working out of 13 million square feet of office space. Their combined annual salaries amount to over $1.2 billion. For more information, including a complete roster of tenants, visit the Research Triangle Foundation on-line.
