Centennial Campus is North Carolina State University's vision of the future--a "technopolis" of university, corporate and government R&D facilities and business incubators, surrounded by housing and recreational amenities. The 1,000 acre site adjacent to the main campus is being ranked among the largest research parks in the nation. Centennial has more than 2 million sq.ft. of space in 13 major buildings, with additional buildings on tap. By the time the campus is complete, the university projects a population of 12,500 corporate and government employees, 12,500 university, faculty, staff and students, 7,000 full-time residents, 600 middle school students, and 2,400 support service personnel.

Centennial Campus is currently home to the NCSU College of Textiles and the College of Engineering will join it soon. There are dozens of smaller centers and facilities, including a National Weather Service forecasting office and NASA's Mars Mission Research Center. Corporate partners include ABB Power Systems, Bayer, Eastman Kodak, Ericsson and the N.C. Technological Development Authority.

On the drawing board for Centennial are residential and retail areas, an international conference center, an 18-hole golf course designed by Tom Fazio, miles of jogging and bike trails, a fitness center, and a town center featuring restaurants and shopping. A monorail line will link to the main campus, providing easy access to classrooms, libraries, concerts and athletic events.

One innovative addition to the campus is the middle school. Centennial Campus Middle School is a magnet program for 6 thru 8 graders, which emphasizes "discovery and exploration." The 600 students have an opportunity to interact with the Centennial Campus partners and with the rest of the university.
