In the past, we've given advice about how to help your children adjust to relocation. The following tips are intended for "big people" moving to the Triangle:

• Sever the moving ties, in other words, unpack. It sounds so simple, but many people live out of boxes six months after they move. The quicker the boxes are emptied, the sooner your new place actually feels like home.
• Subscribe to a newspaper. Tapping into the local news is a big first step in becoming part of the community.
• Buy some good regional and local maps. Come to grips with I-40 and the Beltline or explore the backroads. Adjust your commuting route and schedule as necessary to reduce anxiety and stress.
• Get out and see the Triangle, venture into the South. It's natural to hibernate after a move, but try to find some time on the weekends to play tourist. See the Capitol, drive around the universities, hike in Umstead Park. Later, when you have more time, plan a day trip to the beach or go golfing in Pinehurst.
• Eat vicariously' break away from the restaurant chains, mix with the locals. Try the cheese grits or a pork barbecue sandwich smothered in slaw.
• Pick a college basketball team. Doesn't matter where you're from or where you graduated, March Madness will hit the Triangle soon and your friends, neighbors, co-workers and colleagues will want to know whether you support the Blue Devils, Tarheels or the Pack.
• Move into the culture. Don't drop long-held interests or traditions. If you were a member of a garden club in Boston, join one here. If you whitewater rafted in Colorado, explore the opportunities in North Carolina.
